Artist's Comments

Here it is my version of the famous Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) picture from the new Star Trek XI movie. If you don't know it, you can find the ref-pic here: [link]

A friend had suggested that I should draw this picture. At this time I don't have known about a new star Trek film at all. Then I have watched the first movie trailer and I loved it.

Since the last WIP I have decided to make the skin tone a little more darker for a higher and better contrast. So it got a lot of more depth.
I like this piece much more than the official theatrical teaser poster. In my opinion, and mybe only in my opinion :D, it is the better one. I just love it!

But if you don't think the same, feel free to leave a comment. I'm very interested in to hear what you think about my drawing. :)

Btw my twin sister Feydrim :iconfeydrim: has drawn Spock. Please check her work too: [link]

!(edit: Ok guys. I've rescanned my drawing and have changed it cause the original one has a darker colour tone, than the old scan. The old one had a too intensive white lightness through the scan. I'm sorry for that. I have taken a photo of my drawing so you can see what I mean: [link]
And here the old scan: [link]
I'm sorry for the poor quality on the photo. My camera is very bad and the drawing already is hanging on the wall behind glass. ;)
And yep I have used photoshop but only to adjust the lightness.)!

Beautifully three dimensional work. I actually think it has *more* detail than the movie poster, which is somewhat more contrast-y. The hair at the sides gives the impression of being brilliantly back lit and almost transparent and it might have been nice if you had *imagined* the rest of his head to finish the picture. The left eyebrow (My left on viewing) is perhaps a little heavy, it gives him a slightly villainous look on that side. The eyes are looking straight out of the image and have wonderful translucency. Interestingly, you seem to have given him slightly more of an expression, I think the corners of his mouth are turned up a little more, but this actually works better as he has more *feeling* than the original. Textures are excellent on clothing and neck. Perhaps a gradient (b/w) background would have served to differentiate your work from the original, but this is a minor point.

A great portrait of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk!
The shadings are awesome, a great variety of grey tones with much contrasts and lightenings! This gives it much depth and an dramatic atmosphere, even more than on the reference photo. This absolutely suits to the Star Trek series, doesn't it? ;)
What I also like is the amount of details achieved in this portrait, every single hair can be seen!
A thing which could be improved is the too smooth skin; especially on the forehead, it doesn't fit really to the so detailed eyes, nose and lips, so it looks a bit unnaturalistic.
And the contrast is partly too strong, the nose for example.
All together a stunning work again, keep up your good work

Amazing! I went to see this this afternoon, and you really captured the young Kirk.

Fantastic depth to the piece, love the focus of his stare and the shading is fab!

I was thinking about this drawing today. I was hoping to see it finished before going to see the movie. I just got back from it and I'm so happy to see it done. You captured his likeness perfectly.

And your sisters Spock is stunningly wonderful as well.
